2023: Plans to retain presidency in the North dangerous – Pan-Yoruba group warns

Meanwhile, the pan-Yoruba socio-cultural organisation, Coalition of Oodua Self Determination Groups, (COSEG), has said that the plot by some northern politicians and elders to retain power in the Northern region beyond 2023, is dangerous.

COSEG, in a statement issued in Lagos over the weekend, signed by its Chairman and Publicity Secretary, Dayo Ogunlana and Dele Daramola respectively, warned that presidency must shift to the South-West by 2023, or else key players in the North scheming to retain power and their political party will lose the 2023 election.

The group maintained that the scheme by these northern leaders to jettison the zoning arrangement in the country ahead of the 2023 general elections is capable of triggering a nationwide crisis and advised the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) not to jettison the idea of zoning, maintaining that such a position will definitely rock the boat and create tension across the country.

COSEG also called on the leadership of all political parties in Nigeria to be wary of “greedy and selfish political leaders among them who will do anything to destroy the peace and the little unity we crave to have, because of their interests.

Meanwhile, a northern group under the auspices of Progressive Movement for Democracy, (PMD), yesterday inaugurated steering committee members who were given the mandate to begin the search for Buhari’s successor, come 2023.

Speaking during the inaugural meeting of the movement, the Interim chairman, Hon. Muhammad Auwal Musa noted that today no northerner is happy over what is happening in the country especially the region.

According to the group, the movement is also formed to create a platform for discussing our common problems, challenges and solutions, adding that the need to commence the process of searching for Buhari’s successor now is to avoid tension, disunity and political crisis that are capable of creating crack in the North.

They were also given the mandate to search for a credible and reputable candidate that has the interest of the North and will succeed the president.

The steering Committee Members cut across the seven North-West states of Kano, Jigawa, Kaduna, Katsina, Sokoto and Kebbi.
